About Jeffery R Van Treese DDS

Dr. Van Treese graduated from Miami University, OH in 1982 and went on to Ohio State University where he graduated from the dental school in 1986. He served a general practice residency in 1987 and then came to Sidney to start his dental practice. 2012 marks his 25th year as a dentist in Sidney.

He has been married to Libby since 1981 and they have four young adult children. The whole family is active in Tournament Water Skiing and they have won several national awards. They have one dog and three cats.

Dr. Van Treese is very active in his church, where he is a Board member and past chairman of the Sidney First Methodist Church Foundation. He currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Sidney-Shelby County YMCA with additional responsibilities to the YMCA Foundation Board.

Dr. Van Treese was very active in helping to bring free dental care to the uninsured and under-insured to the Shelby County area by working with the free medical clinic Compassionate Care. He is just beginning a term on the Compassionate Care Board of Directors. He and some of our team members regularly volunteer their time to this great cause.

For the past several years, he has been the local chairman for the Give Kids a Smile program, which is a national event held every February to bring free dental care to children who are uninsured. Many dental offices in our area participate in helping the children of Shelby and Miami County to begin on a journey towards great oral health for a lifetime.

Continuing education is critical to providing the best care possible to our family of patients, and Dr. Van Treese not only takes many courses every year, he provides many opportunities for his team members to do the same. Recent courses he has taken include:

Many of Dr. Van Treese’s young patients in the Sidney, OH area are undergoing some sort of orthodontic treatment. While receiving orthodontic treatment will improve the cosmetics of your smile, the functionality of your mouth, and your long-term health, it can have adverse effects on your current oral health. The reason for these adverse effects is that braces add a lot of bulk to your mouth, and make removing plaque, tartar, food particles, and germs from your mouth more difficult.

Below, Dr. Van Treese offers 4 tips on how to keep your mouth healthy while going through your treatment. While it is harder to keep your mouth clean, it is not impossible!

Use an electric toothbrush

Usually, if you use proper technique, you can remove plaque and tartar from your mouth with no issues at all. However, when you add brackets and wires into your mouth, things get a little more difficult. To counteract all this bulk, you should use an electric toothbrush for more effective brushing and removal or food debris, plaque, and tartar!

Hygiene technique still matters

We touched on technique briefly above. However, Dr. Van Treese wants to stress the importance of using the correct technique when doing your dental hygiene. Proper technique includes brushing the correct way for two minutes at a time and flossing as directed.

Flossing is important

With all the clunky metal in your mouth, flossing becomes much more difficult. However, it is still important to floss your teeth to keep them fully healthy.

Remineralize your teeth

Your teeth demineralize (and remineralize) every single day. By introducing more minerals into your mouth, you will keep your teeth strong and resist more cavities. To consume more minerals, you should choose dental products that contain fluoride, drink more tap water, and consume more dairy products.

You probably know what Invisalign is. It is a system of trays that works to correct your smile in a more sightly and comfortable way than traditional braces. Invisalign trays are worn successively over a period of time to slowly shift your teeth and correct the imperfections in your smile.

Invisalign offers many advantages over traditional braces. These advantages include, but are not limited to, the following:

Trays that are removable

As you could probably guess, traditional braces are in your mouth every hour of every day until your treatment is complete. This means that they limit what you can eat and drink. After all, you don’t want to eat something that will break your wires or brackets, or affect their ability to work properly. With Invisalign, you can simply take your trays out when you go to eat, eat whatever you want, and then replace your trays afterward. More comfortable than braces 

Traditional braces fill your mouth with rubber bands, brackets, and wires. All of these things can poke and bother your cheeks, lips, and mouth. Invisalign does not require any metal and bands to be placed in your mouth, just a tray that is molded to fit over your teeth. 

Less noticeable during every day life

This advantage is especially important to adults who want straighter teeth. Invisalign trays are translucent and are very hard to see during every day life. This means that, as you go about your day, people will hardly be able to tell, if at all, that you are wearing an Invisalign tray. Sadly, the same cannot be said about traditional braces!

Improves your ability to maintain good oral hygiene

Think about everything that is put into your mouth when you receive traditional braces. Wires, bands, brackets, and more. What do all of these things do? They make it much more difficult to brush and floss your teeth in the correct manner. Additionally, these objects offer germs and bacteria a place to harbor and build up on your teeth. This could be bad news for you, as these germs and bacteria may start causing oral health issues.

Did you know that your tooth enamel is the hardest part of your body? Doesn’t that make you glad that it is protecting your pearly whites? However, while hard, your tooth enamel is actually very fragile, and needs to be treated with care.

There are many poor habits that people develop that can cause damage to your enamel. These habits include chewing on pens or pencils, chewing on the ice after their beverage is gone, and biting on their fingernails. In addition to these things, certain foods eat can damage your enamel. These foods include acidic fruits, popcorn (if you bite into a kernel), drinks that contain acid, and more! Lastly, if you have jewelry in your mouth, like a tongue piercing, it can cause cracking or chipping of your enamel, and can collect bacteria that damages your mouth.

Unfortunately, along with your habits and diet, there are some certain dental conditions that can cause damage to your tooth enamel. The most common dental condition that damages your enamel is bruxism. Bruxism, also known as grinding your teeth or clenching your jaw, is a problem that causes tooth enable to wear away. Yes, that’s right, your teeth are similar to icebergs. That is, like icebergs, what you see is much smaller than what is below the surface (in your teeth’s case, it is the surface of your gums and not the surface of water). This means, in order to maintain proper dental health, you need to take care of your gums!

What happens if you don’t maintain the health of your gums?

Most of you probably know about gum disease—after all, almost 3 out of every 4 people suffer with some form of it. If you are not aware of gum disease, it is the consequence of not properly caring for your gums. Gum disease, also known as periodontal disease, is caused when plaque, tartar, and bacteria are not brushed away from where your teeth and gums meet by proper brushing and flossing. 

In early stages, gum disease is referred to as gingivitis, and is easily treated and cured. However, should your gum disease continue to develop, it will not be treated as easily, and, like diseases like diabetes, it cannot be fully cured. Once gum disease has developed, it can cause many other overall and oral health issues. In your mouth alone, gum disease can cause you to lose teeth, lose jaw bone mass, and bad breath (halitosis). 

If you are suffering from gum disease, there is treatment available for you. Dr. Van Treese and his team are equipped to properly diagnose your case and put together a treatment plan to give you the best results. However, we prefer that gum disease never develops in the first place.

Below are a few ways to prevent gum disease from developing:

1) Brush and floss

This seems obvious for your oral health, but, make sure you are gently brushing your gums, flossing as directed, and brushing for a full two minutes.

2) Rinse with mouthwash

Mouthwash can help to remove troublesome food that is stuck between your teeth and throughout your mouth. These food particles, if not removed, can cause bacteria and plaque buildup. 

3) Maintain regular oral wellness visits

Gum disease is extremely common. Receiving regular dental appointments is the best way to treat your oral health issues before they become serious.

Could chewing gum actually be good for your oral health?

Truth is, it depends what kind of gum you are chewing.

If the gum is full of sugar, forget about it. But, if the gum you are chewing is sugar-free, it can actually have many benefits to your oral health. After all, in our last blog article, we learned the sugar-free chewing gum can defend against bad breath.

Gum chewing has been oft criticized by many people over the years. You have probably heard from many places that it would damage your teeth. However, sugar-free gum can actually do the exact opposite. Sugar-free gum offers you some defense against tooth decay, dry mouth, and bad breath.

If you struggle to produce saliva, chewing can be important in stimulating your salivary glands. That is why foods like carrots and celery are great for saliva production. Saliva is important because it neutralizes the acids in your mouth, eliminates bad breath, and is a natural defense against cavities.

Specifically, you should look for gum that contains Xylitol. Xylitol is a sugar substitute that works against cavity-causing-sugars. Xylitol is not found in all sugar-free gum, so be careful which brand you choose.

If you suffer from frequent headaches or TMD, you should try to avoid chewing gum. Chewing gum will introduce additional stress on your TMJ. If you believe you are suffering from TMD, you should schedule an appointment with your dentist sooner rather than later.

Oral Hygiene | Avoiding Halitosis (Bad Breath)

How many people suffer from chronic halitosis (bad breath) in the US?

The answer to this question is: Somewhere between 35% and 45% of the total population, or 80 million people.

Halitosis, better known as bad breath, is triggered by anaerobic bacteria that excretes sulfur compounds. In layman’s terms, bad breath is typically caused by bacteria and food particles that are not removed from your mouth during routine brushing, flossing, and use of mouthwash.

The best way to prevent bad breath is to practice GREAT oral hygiene habits and keep your dental visits routine. At your routine visits, plaque, tartar, and bacteria that cannot be removed by brushing and flossing will be removed.

To avoid bad breath, try the following:

  • Brushing twice per day with proper form (don’t forget your tongue, cheeks, and roof of your mouth)
  • Consider using a tongue scraper
  • Floss every day
  • Use mouth wash
  • If you are a tobacco user, stop using
  • Stay hydrated, dry mouth can cause bad breath
  • Improve your diet (eat more carrots, celery, and apples)
  • Chew sugarless chewing gum

Gum Disease | Maintain The Health Of Your Gums

Do you have healthy gums, or not? You may not have the slightest clue about the health of your gums—but you should. In Dr. Van Treese’s last blog article, he introduced the importance of healthy gums, and what other health issues can stem from gum disease.

Knowing the health of your gums is not always easy, especially when you don’t maintain routine visits to the dentist. Unfortunately, gum disease does not show many signs or symptoms, and is often referred to as a “silent disease.” 

A couple signs of gum disease that you can look for include:

  • Your gums bleeding while you brush or floss.
  • Your gums appearing bright red and puffy.

If you think you might have gum disease, or do not know for sure if you do or not, you may want to consider visiting your dentist. Your dentist has special tools that can determine the health of your gums, if you have gum disease, how developed your gum disease may be, and what a successful treatment plan would be. 

Below, Dr. Van Treese offers a few tips to keeping your gums healthy. Please note that these practices should not replace your routine dental appointments and professional cleanings. 

  • Brush your gums twice a day. While you are brushing your teeth, remember to gently brush your gums as well. Brushing your gums can help to remove bacteria that is on your gums and along your gum line.
  • Brush your top teeth from the top down and your bottom teeth from the bottom up. This brushing technique will help to free up and bacteria or plaque that may be sitting on your gum line. 
  • Remember to floss. When your dentist asks you about your flossing habits, it is not for fun. It is because flossing is just as important as brushing your teeth. 

Your dentist is well equipped to examine your mouth and determine the health of your gums. Your dentist may also put together a treatment plan to restore your gums to health. This treatment plan may require the work of a periodontist as well.
