  • At-Home Systems: An at home system from Dr. Van Treese will make use of custom-made trays to fit your teeth. Your custom-made trays will be filled with a whitening product and worn overnight, or for hours at a time. Dr. Van Treese recommends using the system for seven to ten days to achieve optimal results.
  • Whitening Products Available in Stores: Products like toothpastes, strips, and mouthwashes available in stores will whiten your teeth, but not by much. This is due to a lack of bleaching agent present in the product. These products can lighten your teeth by just one shade. In comparison, the at-home system available at Dr. Van Treese’s office will lighten your teeth by three to eight shades.  
  • OTC Products: Unlike products available on the shelves, these products do contain a bleaching product like hydrogen peroxide. However, the bleaching product that is contained is in much smaller amounts than an at-home system.
  • Veneers/Crowns: As we stated above, teeth discolored by trauma or medications will not respond to products that contain hydrogen peroxide or carbamide. These products will offer you a chance to have bright white teeth no matter what the cause.

With the many options available for teeth whitening, it is imperative to consult your dentist as to what option will work best for you. Your dentist will be able to properly evaluate your teeth through a thorough exam, and determine what will offer you the best results. 

One common side effect of teeth whitening to be aware of is tooth sensitivity. Your tooth sensitivity should subside after your procedure is completed. If your sensitivity becomes too intense, you can suspend your treatment and restart once the sensitivity has subsided.

The reason for this, is that certain causes will not respond to teeth whitening products and will require a different approach. As an example, if your teeth are discolored due to trauma or the medications you take, they will not respond to a whitening product that contains a bleaching agent like hydrogen peroxide. In addition to medications and trauma, any fillings, bondings, crowns, or bridges will not respond to a bleaching agent.

A study at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU), located in Cleveland’s University Circle neighborhood, found a potential connection between rheumatoid arthritis and periodontal disease. The study conducted at CWRU required the participation of 40 people who suffered from both periodontal disease and RA. In this study, half of the participants received deep cleanings and half the participants did not. Over the course of the study—in six weeks to be exact—the participants who received deep cleanings were suffering from less pain, less swelling, and less joint discomfort than those who did not receive deep cleanings. The reason believed for this, is that the bacteria throughout your mouth may cause additional inflammation, and enhances RA progress (similar to diabetes). Tip #1: Eat Breakfast

Breakfast is imperative to a good start to the day. Saying it’s the most important meal of the day isn’t just to sell more eggs and bacon. Eating breakfast will give you more energy during the morning and keep you from overeating at lunch, which causes that afternoon “crash.”

More than one in three Americans are considered to be obese. If you are one of these people, you should try to start getting your weight under control. What is important is finding an activity you love doing (walking, running, biking, rowing, playing basketball, weight lifting, etc.) and stick to it. Additionally, you should start watching your calorie intake more carefully. You don’t need to do some glamorous diet to lose weight. The formula is simply: burn more calories than you take in and give it time!

In the last several years, we have seen many advances in dental products and technology. While these advances are great, it leaves many of my patients asking if they still need to visit the dentist two times per year.

Typically, the answer to this question is still yes. There are several reasons why your routine check-ups are still necessary, including the following:

– Your dentist can check for problems, and spot them, before you notice or feel them develop.

Food

Sticky Candies: The mixture of sugar and stickiness makes these candies a disaster for the health of your teeth.

Beverages

Parenting brings many difficult tasks. From the time you are changing diapers to the time you are teaching your children how to drive, you are constantly challenged. One of the most difficult challenges parents face is getting their kids to properly brush their teeth. Unfortunately, kids do not understand how valuable their teeth are and what neglecting them will do to their oral and overall health.

Hint #1: Set a brushing schedule for your children. If you make brushing a part of their daily routine it will become a habit. The sense of brushing their teeth should not be optional, but something that is a part of their every day.Family Dentistry

Hint #2: Your children have a special connection with their stuffed animals or blanket. These things go everywhere with them; they take them in the car, to bed, and to grandma and grandpa’s house. These objects give your children a sense a security and comfort. If you allow your children to bring these things to brush their teeth, they will be more comfortable. Additionally, having their stuffed animals with them while brushing will pique their imagination resulting in more brushing time.

Hint #3: Give your children the choice of which toothpaste to use. Children receive very few opportunities to make decisions on their own. If you let your children choose which toothpaste they will use, it will give them a sense of pride in the decision. Please watch your children brush in order to ensure they are using a good amount of toothpaste. A little dab will do.

Hint #4: Let your children use an electric toothbrush. An electric toothbrush will help your child for a couple of reasons. First, due to the poor brushing form children use, an electric toothbrush will make up for this and ensure their teeth are being cleaned properly. Secondly, children tend to be interested in an electric toothbrush and will use them longer than a “boring” manual brush.

Hint #5: Choose a song your child loves and designate it for brushing time. If your child gets to hear a song they love every time they brush, they will be more inclined to brush more often and look forward to this time.
