Previously, Dr. Van Treese explained the causes of snoring and the potential side effects that snoring can have on someone.
Sleep apnea is one of the major causes of snoring and is actually a common disease that millions of Americans deal with. Sleep apnea causes an individual to stop breathing for a few seconds during the night. When you stop breathing, your brain wakes you up to get you breathing again.
If you leave sleep apnea untreated, there are a number of other health issues that you may experience. There are two types of sleep apnea, which include Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and Central Sleep Apnea (CSA).
Obstructive Sleep Apnea
OSA occurs when an individuals airway is partially or completely obstructed. When this obstruction occurs your brain does not receive enough blood flow, triggering your brain to wake you up.
Signs of OSA:
Daytime tiredness
Headaches when you wake up
Snoring
Restless sleeping
Causes of OSA:
Alcohol
Smoking
Oversized tonsils
Age
Obesity
Central Sleep Apnea (CSA):
Compared to OSA, CSA results when your brain fails to send signals to your body to breathe. OSA is considered to be more of physical issues, and CSA is considered more of communication/mental problem.
