Smoking cigarettes or using another form of tobacco is extremely dangerous for your oral and overall health. Oral cancer is an extremely prevalent disease with over 40,000 people diagnosed in 2012. Even if you have not used tobacco products during your life, you should still be aware of oral cancer. It is reported that a quarter of all oral cancer cases appear in individuals who have never smoked or used tobacco.
While oral cancer is extremely common and dangerous, it is relatively easy to treat if caught in its early stages. The best way to catch oral cancer early on is to look for signs and symptoms at home and receive routine dental check-ups.
Below are several symptoms you can look for at home:
- Patches of red, white, or red and white spots in your mouth
- Bleeding that cannot be attributed to gum disease or any other diseases
- Pain in your throat/your throat feeling restricted
- Extreme weight loss
- Numbness and other sensations in your mouth
In addition to looking for the above, it is critical to maintain your oral wellness visits. During a check-up at your dentist’s office, you may receive an oral cancer screening. This, along with your dental hygienist and dentist looking in your mouth, will allow you to identify and seek treatment before too much development has occurred. If you notice any of the above symptoms, you should schedule a dental appointment ASAP.
If you have been a smoker or have used another type of tobacco product, we recommend visiting your dentist on more frequent occasions. Frequent visits will keep you healthy and safe.
