One of the most important parts of your dental care visits is a head, neck, and oral cancer screening. These cancers can be deadly, and early detection is key.
What is head, neck, and oral cancer?
Head, neck, and oral cancer can be dangerous when not treated early. These cancers originate around the tongue, gums, lips, cheeks, and throat. When spotted early, treatments can be simple and these cancers have a high survival rate. Because of this, it is important to come see us regularly for head, neck, and oral cancer screenings.
What are head, neck, and oral cancer screenings?
When you come in for your appointment, we will do a thorough screening. We do a visual exam where we look over your head, neck, and mouth for any irregularities and signs of cancer. Next, we will do a physical exam to look for any areas of discomfort. Finally, we will use blue light technology to look for any irregular tissue in your mouth.
What are the signs and symptoms of these cancers?
These cancers can be very hard to detect, but there are a few warning signs. If you have lumps in your lymph nodes, experience changes in your voice, see any growths in your mouth, experience problems swallowing, notice changes in your skin color and texture, or have persistent earaches, you should see a medical professional right away.
If you think that you may have head, neck, or oral cancer, or if you are experiencing any of the symptoms listed above, make an appointment to see us right away. These conditions can be hard to detect on your own, and early diagnosis from a medical professional is crucial for your treatment and survival.
