    TMJ Treatment

If you are experiencing severe jaw pain you might be suffering from TMJ, a condition with the temporomandibular joint. TMJ can be very painful and can lead to many different side effects, greatly affecting your quality of life.

TMJ disorder refers to any issues with the temporomandibular joint. The temporomandibular joint connects jaw to the skull and allows you to chew, speak, and open and close your mouth. Problems associated with TMJ can be painful and can greatly affect your daily life.

What are the symptoms of TMJ disorder?
Symptoms include a headache in the temples and behind the eyes, as well as jaw, face, and neck tension. There can be a painful and limited opening of the jaw joint and you may hear popping and clicking. In severe cases, the jaw may lock in place. If the disorder progresses and is left untreated the pain can become agonizing.

    How is TMJ disorder diagnosed?

To properly treat TMJ, you must see a dental professional. At our practice, we are more than prepared to help you manage and treat your TMJ. To begin your diagnosis, we will analyze your medical history and ask you a series of questions to better understand your symptoms. Making models of your teeth and measurements of your jaw, we can simulate your jaw movement on an artificial jaw and prescribe the appropriate treatment. TMJ can be caused by many different factors:

    • Misaligned teeth
    • Bruxism, commonly known as teeth grinding
    • Trauma to your face or jaw
    • Excessive stress and anxiety
    • Arthritis

    TMJ Treatments

Depending on the severity of your condition, we will usually start treatment with a custom oral appliance. This appliance is a plastic device that is worn over your teeth. It helps to relax your muscles and to realign your bite. As your muscles relax, headaches you have been experiencing related to TMJ will decrease. Your device will be monitored and adjusted over time by Dr. Van Treese until your pain is gone and your jaw is functioning normally again.

Each case of TMJ is different and will require different treatment and care. Nightguards, orthodontics, and equilibrations can all be used to help relieve the symptoms of TMJ. We will evaluate your condition and work with you to determine the best course of treatment.

If you are suffering from TMJ or if you have unexplained pain that you believe may be related to the condition, contact our office today. Dr. Van Treese will evaluate your condition and diagnose the problem and determine the best course of action for you. TMJ can be incredibly painful, and can greatly affect your everyday life, so don’t wait. Contact us online, or give us a call at (937)-284-4500 for a TMJ consultation.
